I'm pretty sure I'm going to like the D3, so I'm exploring the possibilities of older lenses. Glass is expensive; some of the lenses I want are well into 4 figures if I try to get the latest models, and naturally a lot of newer lenses are designed for the DX sensor. There's a wealth of information out there, but naturally personal experience/relayed information is easier to discuss.
I'm looking on eBay at a ridiculous number of lenses when searching "Nikkor" and finding many which on pure speed/focal length are ticking the right boxes as useful. Even the 50mm f1.8, which looks to be a cheap one because (one assumes) it was shoved on every entry-level Nikon SLR made in the 70s is interesting as a lens when I'm going to be topping out at 24mm with the requested lenses (I am torn on the 24-120 VR, but I don't think they're sending that, preferring to focus on the PC-E and fast 14-24 f2.8 I mentioned).
I need to verify what F-mount lenses work, but it certainly seems that pretty much anything back to the 60s will be safe unless it's really silly, and even then a lot just need wholly manual/mirror lockup use.
What experiences have the Nikon users on my flist had with using older lenses. I appreciate this will be from a DX sensor POV in most cases, but it's still relevant; I can always use the D3 in DX mode if I get excessive vignetting or aberration. I'm also interested in Canon and other experiences of older lenses - the nearest I've got is a K-mount adaptor for my SD which wasn't awfully good, and a selection of K-mount glass of relatively boring specifications.

And I'm kinda glad, because I might pick one of these up instead when it's been out a while and supplies are consistent.
