I bought the Astra - not a bad car for £650 (with 12 months MOT as the MOT expires in February) in the end, having found that the mileage of 80,000 is most likely accurate. Took it to Kwik-Fit to change oil, front tyres and check it over; plus points are VERY recent brake lines front to rear and across the back, CV boots intact, body straight, bushes okay. Oil change there because they charge £25 and the oil would be £16, the filter £5, and the hassle - oh god, the hassle. That Diesel engine is a nightmare.
Still need to balance the wheels (the new tyres went on unbalanced because their machine is broken, but I put the new tyres on the back and the rears were very recent Michelins, and well balanced). Car needs brake pads so I might try and do that on Monday. Siani has been out with upholstery foam because that's her thing, making the car's seats stain free.
Wandered to Halfords to get lightbulbs and one of those 4 into 1 12v things (iPod AND Satnav!), and the huge R/C Mustang I wanted was 1/2 price. So... I bought it.
So fuel costs for the trip down will be MUCH lower and I think the car should be reliable, though I do expect crunchy brakes at the end of it if I don't change the pads.
It's been a productive use of the daylight hours!
