I have a problem. I think the 'cheap economical car' I want will need some cheap, economical repairs RIGHT before we do the 700-1,000 mile drive next week, making it rather less economical. Bloody cars. Just once, I'd like to get a second-hand car that doesn't need brakes 100 miles after I've driven it (like, do people measure the pads before selling them to me or something?).
On the plus side it is quite economical - I reckon twice the economy of the RX8 - and because it's so UTTERLY slow (specs suggest 0-60 of 16.5 seconds and top speed of 98mph in return for a not-very-exciting 44mpg) I'm quite relaxed driving it. Mostly, for the money, I reckon I'd get the same economy, for the same money, by going back to a 1989 Golf GTi 8v. In fact, I KNOW I got 45mpg from that - I got 52mpg on one drive, and whilst I drove slow, I don't think I drove as slowly as the Ashtray!
A Golf GTI will not sort Siani's commuter car issue out, but she was looking longingly at an abandoned Metro on the A7, so I'm not sure the Ashtray will either.
Maybe I'll just suck up the economy, enjoy the streetcred, A/C and CD player, pack a touch lighter, and take the RX8 - and save the cash for a car which isn't QUITE so depressingly slow!
Still. Gotta admit. A T-reg car for the money... and it's not THAT bad.
