Nearly all the ranges and speeds I'm liable to use have stiff competition lens-wise - such as 70-200 or 24-70 - for the wide angle work I want to do, however, my choice is Nikon, Nikon, or possibly Nikon.
Therefore, no choice is being made and I'm ordering both lenses. I don't want to sacrifice the PC-E lens that is part of the justification for buying a D3 in the first place, and the 14-24mm f2.8 has no competition. There are a number of 12-24 alternatives, but they're considerably slower.
Moving above 24mm the options are a: vastly cheaper, and b: numerous. David just emailed me this (probably to annoy me as I can't actually buy it from the US).

Which is a nice fast 24-60mm f2.8 for $199. Seriously. Not a DC, but EX DG, which usually translates as "good to excellent" without the caveat of "for the price".
