I have either a slightly nastier than usual cold, or mild flu (got the aching muscles/sore throat bit). Regardless, we popped over to see
mr_pete and
kamalaya, and I drove the MR2 which will be taking the place of the RX8 when it goes back whilst I sort out what car I want next.
I haven't driven a Mk 2 MR2 properly before, so I'm quite impressed. Obvious downsizing including the size of the actual car, boot space is comparable to the X1/9 at the back, and the tradeoff for the big front boot of the X1/9 vanishing is a spare wheel you can get to, a roof panel storage setup that doesn't prevent access to shopping, and no rust. Compared to the RX8 the MR2 is astoundingly impractical, but I have two kinds of driving I generally need to do:
Getting MYSELF somewhere.
Getting STUFF or PEOPLE somewhere.
For the former, the MR2 is nicer than the RX8 in that it is "open topped", handles traffic in a far nicer way, uses less fuel (I think I'll get an easy 35mpg when I'm not caning it), and is overall smaller. Probably alright in snow, too, since it's mid engined and has some weight over the back wheels.
For the latter, the RX8 was pretty crap, and I have the Delica.
It'll save me some money to run the MR2 alongside the Delica, and it'll also be fun in summer, when the T-bar roof will be much appreciated. And I didn't take pictures, but as a 1997 Goodwood Green Phase 3 (depending on your terminology), it's quite a handsome car.
What I am quite looking forward to is getting to use my wonderful Toyota dealer again for the inevitable little bits a 10 year old car needs. They were fantastic when I had Seras, so I think the MR2 will be right up their street.
The Inpulse One drum machine I got from Bob Henrit is now mostly working; it needs a battery and fault tracing on the multiplexer board, possibly a bad connection but maybe a fault in the output or mixer, as 2 pads are triggering but silent. Sound data is present, so I assume they're playing and the audio from those two pads is not making it past a certain stage.
Time for more Lemsip. I am not looking forward to the drive back oop north tomorrow :(
