Computer-based synthesizers. Once you discount the PC market and the FM Sound generators marketed for the MSX, there was actually very little serious on the market - Mountain Music's system for the Apple II (dating from 1980) and the BBC-based Hybrid Music system, which dates from 1984 but didn't hit the market as a full package until 1987. Which explains why it's so rare now!
Looking for other systems to make sure, but I have seemingly secured a cheap Alpha Syntauri on eBay Canada, and my Hybrid system is getting to be complete again.
I like writing. I need more stuff to write about, I think.
