Jast an aside
Sep. 2nd, 2005 03:54 pmI've been relatively subdued over NoLa, because this isn't of human doing. Unlike WWII horrors, or terrorists, I can't really get an angle on this beyond "Shit. I can't believe that this is happening, in this way". It's not so much the natural disaster element as the truly incomprehensible behaviour of the people and the authorities.
I mean, sure, if I were left behind, I'd be the one with the AK47 and shotgun. I'm already teetering on the brink of going apeshit and blowing up half of society, so any excuse would be welcome... but this is the fucking 21st century. There is NO reason for a world superpower's civilians to be starving and dying, trapped in "safe" locations. No excuse whatsoever.
In fact, the only thing that makes me angrier, is the knowledge that certain people take it upon themselves to 'take care' of countless cats, and then let them die, fleeing the scene. Hell, kids are a pain to cart about too, why not leave them? If you want to 'rescue' 30 cats which may otherwise have lived or died, but had their chances, you then cannot just leave them to drown. That's worse, IMO, than just putting them in a sack with a brick and chucking them in the river. It's like giving them concrete shoes and drowning them in the bath. You can't see them or hear them, but YOU are sentencing your 'loved' pets to a slow and unpleasant death.
Most sensible people may only have a couple of animals. I understand that some places are turning people's animals away, and you cannot blame the people in that situation, but taking the decision to leave on your own, with your own transport and belongings, and leaving your many pets behind is utterly unforgivable.
It's the sort of horrific tragedy one could write a book about. Maybe call it the City of Lost Cat Souls or something. Maybe a nice gothic title, maybe a gothic author could be found to write it. *ponders*
You can be sure that if I was in NoLa, I'd be in a large boat, with machine guns (said owner of boat either being co-operative, or nowhere to be seen *cough*), some food for myself, and a million half-drowned cats with all the IAMS I couldloot find (Sorry. I know some people on my friends list have relatives who are almost certainly going to be affected by this disaster, and I hope that they pull through. Your Government is letting you down horribly, and I cannot believe that they are doing so so overtly.
