It's 1970.
Here's Citroën's idea of a family car: Disc brakes, OHC flat four engine, hydropneumatic suspension:

Here's what BMC would like to sell you - drum brakes, OHV engine...:

And before you say "Oh, that was designed in 1948, that's unfair" - BL's Marina was based on it and finally got killed off in 1984...
ETA: I am awfully sorry to lovers of the Morris Minor; it is quite unfair of me to pick that one out of the BMC/BL midsize/compact range against the GS (though my point that the Minor was still in production when the GS was launched remains valid, I think).
