If you press F, A, I and L
Sep. 6th, 2008 08:48 pmToday got off to a good start.
Then the cat threw up on my desk.
Then Jen found mushrooms growing in the bathroom. Like the mushrooms that took root for a bit in Hawick.
Then Tish went out and was fighting with the neighbour's cat, which always gets the neighbour screaming at the cats so I went to remove her with my own yelling instead.
I was all geared up for a nice day relaxing, tidying then perhaps baking some Dalek cookies.
I got so annoyed with the cat/house/neighbour that I looked for detached houses to rent.
I found this:
http://www.green-property.com/Property/Residential/for-rent/Sutton-Coldfield/West-Midlands/hard0069.aspx
We went to see it.
Pros: It's detached, it has a lovely garden, it's got a garage and all that parking, it's in a nice bit of Birmingham, it's well designed inside with a good kitchen, dining room (kitchen is accessed via that, though), bedrooms with loads of storage. I can get out of the driveway without having to panic I'm going to be stuck because someone's parked too far over the H marking. No theatre visitors.
Cons: It would be another move, it's a bit cramped in terms of room dimensions, it's a bit close to the road, it's not as close to train/gym, etc.
And the biggest one? We just renewed the rent. We'd have to find another deposit, move everything 4 miles up the road (I don't think I can face that disruption again). On the plus side, it seems that "under £800" rent per month does get a detached house with parking around Sutton Coldfield, so I am not going to panic TOO much (I've looked at what else is in the price range and area). I cannot see rents increasing that much.
Possibly a nice place to buy, but not somewhere to make the effort for just to feel uncertain again. I know plenty of people rent feeling totally confident about how long they can live there, but this is a new thing for me and whilst I love this place, the theatre's attitude to it really does bother me. They could decide to remove ALL the parking and garden completely and we'd be screwed, and their visitors are so utterly hopeless at parking I'm not leaving my car in that carpark; I've seen the drama students using each other's cars as sonar already.
I need to speak to the theatre people and basically make them give me a schedule for removing the parking here. It's making me REALLY unhappy knowing that at any moment they could potentially start tearing up the garden. I'd like to just relax and feel settled, and I can't because of this.
After this, we went to B&Q. I have a new cordless drill with clever batteries and a cordless power screwdriver which I will use to finish making the kitchen units in Hawick. I've also got a new box of various drill bits, and Jen repotted her plants. I used the drill to fit the handles to my office unit. Despite measuring repeatedly, each one is slightly different; I blame using a tape measure and not a steel rule (since I don't have one of those), and my crap lack of depth perception eyesight. IKEA only make x basic types of handle, however - it wouldn't kill them to have the handle positions pre-marked.
On the whole, I think I'm making myself stressed out with no good reason. I just wish Hawick would get some interest.
ETA: Also, I ache LOADS from going back to the gym. I suspect I overdid it. Which is perfectly normal, but it makes going back on Monday a bit worrying since I'm not sure which exercises I should do - I can't remember how long I ached for before between stages of going "right. Reached new level now. PUSH" and feeling comfortable. I think the new machine they have encouraged me too much and the lack of footrests (mentioned in the instructions but not, apparently, fitted or visible) resulted in my lifting the entire machine off the ground at one point. I suspect I was doing it wrong (it's one you sit on facing some levers, and pull the levers forward. It's for backs/shoulders).
