Sep. 4th, 2007 11:10 pmMigraine. Ugh.
Today I have acquired a petrol lawnmower and mowed half the lawn, completed some work, replaced the distributor cap and rotor arm on the Volvo, bought the droplinks for the front suspension and ordered some spring compressors (need to order the strut top plates, though), and got 75% of the way through installing Siani's birthday present in her car.
Part of this has been messed up because some spotty teenager in Halfords neglected to mention that the JVC's subwoofer output (i.e. pre-amp outputs) will only work if the rear speakers are disconnected.
My mood is not good.
Disconnecting the rear speakers involves cutting the car audio/car wiring loom, or taking the rear door apart. I cannot believe that any modern car stereo would expect you to not have rear speakers if you selected that you wanted the rear line output to be "subwoofer".
I feel like I bought the wrong item now, and I've lost 4 hours of faffing, had no dinner, and have a killer headache that is making me nearly fall over. I'll get the macaroni that's been waiting for me in a minute, but I really get very annoyed when what is essentially high-tech gear is sold by people who can barely breathe without instructions. Next time I'm in Birmingham, I'm going to go to that branch of Halfords and tell the 'assistant' in question precisely what I think of his product knowledge in front of his manager.
In order to sort out Siani's stereo, I'm going to see if the local Halfords will take said head unit back (it's a JVC, by the way, in case anyone reading wants an iPod-friendly head unit and also subwoofer output - double check what the unit you're looking at does for the subwoofer!) and exchange it for the Alpine or Sony units - if they have a sensible arrangement of pre-outs, anyway. If they don't then I think the solution is to fit a second amp which drives the rear speakers and wire it to the front pre-outs (which, annoyingly, do NOT require the front speakers to be disconnected to work. What the FUCK?).
I've never come across this before.
On the plus side, half of Siani's car is now cleaner than it's ever been, as I had to remove the front seat to get the sill trims off, and since they were all apart, I cleaned the hard-to-reach gaps between seat and console and so forth.
I was in a slightly better mood before this; I finally managed to get
jenova_red a copy of the Virgin/Cryo/Exxos Dune: Spice Opera soundtrack CD from the Dune game released in the early 90s. This is an astoundingly hard bit of original media to find, and the one I found previously I was outbid on - fortunately despite losing net access and having bid half what I bid last time, I won this copy!
EDIT: You know what really irks me? Part of why I chose the JVC was familiarity - Siani hadn't found the one in the Sera, or indeed the earlier one in her Metro, annoying. And I KNOW the Sera's subwoofer output worked in a logical fashion, because I made a custom loom that wired the whole lot into the 10-speaker Sera sound system, including the factory-fit subwoofer.
