I've been packing away my old machines, but the Commoodore 64 did get pulled out of the boxes to play with the Prophet 64 - and now I'm thinking about doing a quick test on it. A timing test.
In the old days - before CDs and so forth - you'd shove a tape in your cassette recorder and wander off to make a cup of tea.
I'm currently playing MotorStorm on the PS3 - an excellent "free for all" like racing game (it would be nice to have more free-roaming ability in it, as the scenery/terrain is fantastic). The load times. OMG. I definitely - if I didn't have to push the controller a couple of times (which due to the range of them, is entirely feasible from in the kitchen) - have time to make a cup of tea. And not only that, but when I've completed a level/want to try a different level because the one I'm playing has bikes in and I'm useless with the bikes, the loading is there again.
Wii suffers a little from the same fate; the Xbox does, but MotorStorm (NFS:Carbon isn't half as bad for it) really is pretty heavy on the whole loading thing.
Have consoles become less of an instant gaming thing? And is this why I like the Wii's retro game collection so much (note to Wii-people - Galaga and PacMan NES ports have appeared. PacMan suffers from poor response from the standard Wiimote, but might be better with the retro controller).
