Mar. 7th, 2007 11:27 am1994, early - maybe spring? It's between January and June, when I got my Manta. I've got three cars - a LandRover 109" petrol, a yellow Ford Fiesta Popular (Mk 1) with spotlights and an air intake on the bonnet nicked from a scrapped Mitsubishi because it was the same shade of yellow, and my Fiat X1/9. I am, like I always was when I was that age, single. Mostly hanging out with Sally (my lesbian best friend, who looked vaguely like me - we had the same hairstyle with the blonde bit), and a friend from college called Chelsea and her bloke - she's probably pregnant.
Driving from Galashiels to Edinburgh, listening to Blur's new Parklife album; going to local nightclubs and failing to even talk to anyone, listening to SoM but still looking more grunge than hippy; torn grey jeans, tie-die shirt or faded grey over long or short sleeved t-shirts. Doing production for a local high-profile music fanzine and looking to launch a local magazine (never did bother with that idea; I'm far too disdainful of the local 'scene' which is mostly tribute acts and awful pub singers).
Getting up early. The car is covered with fine condensation, and I'm annoyed; it's sunny and I wanted to wax it again. My car was never dirty. I used to unclip the trims to avoid getting wax on them (and protect the paint behind). By the time I get to Hawick my car will be dry, of course; I'm not at college now but I still see my friends in Hawick sometimes. Doing 80+ miles in a day isn't going to bother me, even if I don't go anywhere. The roads are limitless, and this is before speed cameras and the high traffic density.
I bought myself a Manta, and had to sell the X1/9. That's okay. I like the Manta too. I listened to Foo Fighters and White Zombie, and Björk, and raced the local salesmen in their Probes and XRs, and sometimes sat in the old VX1800 I had in the garage dreaming of getting it restored, and listening to Hendrix or Pulp.
In some ways it was really great, you know? I suppose being 18-21 IS usually pretty good. But I didn't have the friends. I remember my cars and the music, not friends especially.
Now I have quite a few friends that I really value above all else. I might dream about a new Porsche or something, but I don't feel any great need to buy more cars, or stuff - the Astra, let alone the RX8, will get me to wherever. Some people probably don't even realise how much I enjoy seeing them, or miss being able to easily see them - but I regret that I didn't point that car to Edinburgh sooner and find the Mission, or when I first joined upg, I didn't go and see what all the fuss was about with this "Whitby" whatsit.
Can I have another go on the ride, please? It was fun, and I want to bring some people along with me...
