Jul. 3rd, 2006 10:40 amRight, off to Kelso, then possibly to Edinburgh to sort out paying for the cello and some guitar hooks from GuitarGuitar (can't be arsed taking guitars in to show them though). I might get Stringers to look at the viola, but I've tweaked it some more and I think I've got it bang on. And Jewsons for wood, lots and lots and lots of wood.
No post yet, I'm going to have to poke an American I think. There's "being cool" about something, and being pissed off. I'm moving to the latter.
I hate being "slightly under the weather". I feel grotty and don't feel like singing, and get exceptionally negative about things that should make me happy. I think I'll get some hayfever pills.
Chicken treats delayed due to tomorrow being forecast to be the hottest day of the year so far, which apparently often results in dead treats.
Also: Fucking trains. There were no value advance tickets last month for going down South, so I waiting to see if anything comes up. Nothing. To use this country's glorious Public Transport system to get to Southend will cost £200 for two people - AT LEAST. £400 with "Saver Singles". (The best I can get is £39 down, £69 up - each - and that means driving to Berwick not Carlisle).
Jesus. We WILL be going to Southend, but faced with between 6 and 8 hours on a train and a bill for up to £400 (actually, it could be more. For a first open single, it would cost £700 for two people), I'm going to check flights and train combinations, or we're driving. Well, I'm driving. It's because it's a weekend and one where everyone is going on holiday I expect.
Okay. The car will cost about £120 in fuel for such a trip (Southend, 388 miles, range of tank, about 300, cost per tank, around £50). But that's got a radio, and reclining seats, and stuff. Also, there aren't any strangers in it.

Jul. 3rd, 2006 01:52 pmJewsons are a bit crap, really.
4.7m lengths of 50mm x 50mm (or to sensible people, 2x2) - 'rough sawn' (they looked at me like I'd offered them a fried weasel when I said "wet sawn"), they only offer treated. Or they have dressed sections which are fiercely expensive.
£23 or so for roofing felt "Green mineral felt" (again, the only non underfelt they offer - not "Have in stock", but offer). That'll be fine I'm sure, 10m x 1 roll. Should be enough.
But i need to get untreated timber. And ideally less wasteful lengths; 4.7 isn't really that helpful as there will be a lot of 900mm lengths of dubious worth left over.
This week, I am fighting my Dr. Pepper addiction. I have a sammich, but I will have tea instead of Dr. Pepper. I think my hurting leg is a reaction to the lack of Dr. Pepper and my nerves operate on sickly-sweet gloop.
No need to go to Edinburgh for guitar hooks, as Pete's shop in Kelso had some.
Something about 192bhp, RWD and Tom Petty on the CD player improves the occasional down mood.

Jul. 3rd, 2006 03:19 pmI was listening to
deathboy's cover of Down by the Water - a song I've considered covering myself - and decided to doodle around with ideas. Sorry - nothing to show you - but fuck, my voice is LOW. And it's in no mood to go any higher than the second octave for that song, dammit. My basic idea sounds fucking evil and perverted, but I can't write the music for it. Such is life. I've never managed to give myself the "oooh, nice interval" shiver with my vocals before.
Just to prove to myself that I haven't actually just broken my voice, I attacked some Level 42, then of course, the Sun Always Shines on TV.

Jul. 3rd, 2006 04:21 pmHah. In your face, Jewsons.
Untreated 2.4 Meter lengths of 2x2 rough sawn - £1.30 ex VAT each. Delivery of 21 of them - fiver. But I am going to go over the plans, check the exact amount needed to ensure no problems, then pop in and order/pay for the wood. They also do stuff with points which is intended for fence posts, but we'll probably be using postfix so won't need that - I'll double check the 2.4 isn't staked because if it is, 300mm or so will be waste.
Source: Colin Robertson, a timer yard in Charlesfield 'famous' for an accident recently.
(Keyline only do treated and recommended these people since they would order from them to get us untreated, but for such a small amount it's not worth the effort).
