Kelso Square

Rapid drumming, over and over
Across the river it could be heard
Like a tribal beat, a warning of battles yet to be fought
And underneath it all a steady growl
And louder still, the thump, thump, thump
Of basslines and bravado

Come closer to the town, causal like
Don't cause offence, or draw the eye
Don't start at the squeal of abuse, the tortured yelp of violence
As two more tyres fight for grip
As two more hands fight for wrists
Of no means yes, and bravado

For every Escort there is a suitor
For every Triumph, a Victor
For every Danielle or Lisa, a Gary, a Danny, A Speedy
And we say no more, not again
And we convene in the Square, all stern
To chase them, with bravado

Those wheels in your mind turn faster
And the ones under your car, slow
They fight for grip, on the cobbles, on the past, on your heart
And we slip behind the wheel
And we hold on for our lives
As we wave goodbye, to bravado.
